St. Stephan / Matten

Beautiful, welcoming mountain town

St. Stephan is a radiant jewel with its historic church from the 12th C nestled carefully among the town’s many traditional farmhouses. Summertime rambles by hiker and naturalist alike allow fascinating discoveries in the unique and remote hanging valleys like the Fermeltal and the many rich, alpine meadows. Traditional farming and ancient customs such as yodeling and alphorn playing form the roots of the local inhabitants.

In the wintertime St. Stephan is the trailhead for breathtaking ski tours on the Albristhorn and Wistäthorn. There is also a direct access to the skiing region "Gstaad Mountain Rides".
Between Lenk and St. Stephan, the relaxing, small town of Matten can be found. A small grocer takes care of any local needs, and a beautiful fireplace with grill can be found just about in the middle of town. Matten is the gateway to the dreamy, remote paradise called the Fermeltal, a hanging valley nearly frozen in time.
